Importing Wallpaper from China: Vinyl, Non-Woven and 3D Wall Murals
Wallpaper has moved firmly back into commercial interior design, covering hotel corridors, restaurant feature walls, office meeting rooms and retail environments where painted plaster cannot deliver pattern, texture or brand colour at scale. China is the largest global supplier of both standard rolls and custom murals, and the modern category splits into three technology families that look similar on screen but behave very differently on the wall. This guide walks project buyers through the specification points that determine whether the wallpaper stays on the wall for ten years or peels off in the second season.
Three wallpaper families and the jobs they do
The first family is vinyl coated wallpaper, where a layer of polyvinyl chloride is printed and embossed onto a paper or fabric backing. It is washable, scrubbable and impact resistant, which makes it the default for hotel corridors and high-traffic hospitality walls. The second is non-woven wallpaper, made from a blend of cellulose and textile fibres that forms a dimensionally stable sheet; it is breathable, strippable and the easiest to install, which suits residential and office use. The third is the 3D wall mural, a digitally printed panel, often on non-woven backing, that covers an entire feature wall in a single image; it is the choice for reception walls and brand environments where a photographic finish is required.
Washability, fire rating and the test figures
Three test figures separate a real specification from a decorative swatch. The first is washability, classified by EN 233 from grade 0 (decorative only) through grade 3 (scrubbable with soap and brush); a hotel corridor should specify grade 2 or higher, a wet area near a basin should specify grade 3. The second is the fire rating, critical for commercial interiors, where most codes require EN 13501 Class B or equivalent for wall coverings in escape routes and public areas. The third is lightfastness, rated on a blue-wool scale from 1 to 8, where a rating of 6 or higher means the colours will hold for a decade in a sunlit room. Request all three figures before placing an order, because a beautiful pattern that fades or burns is a warranty liability.
Roll sizes, pattern repeat and paste type
The two standard roll sizes are the European 10.05 by 0.53 metre and the wider 50-metre bulk roll, and the choice depends on the installer tradition in the destination market. The pattern repeat, the vertical distance before the design repeats, must be confirmed on every patterned design, because a large repeat of 50 centimetres or more dramatically increases waste and therefore the total square metres to order. The paste type matters more than buyers expect: non-woven wallpaper is paste-the-wall, applied to the wall rather than the paper, which simplifies installation and reduces mess, while vinyl wallpaper is often paste-the-paper and requires a soak time before hanging. Confirm the paste type in writing so the installer arrives on site with the correct materials.
Eco-certification, batch matching and roll packing
For any project with a green-building target, request the eco-certification, typically the French A+ emission label or the equivalent GREENGUARD Children and Schools, which confirms low volatile organic compound emissions. Equally important for the finished wall is batch matching: wallpaper is printed in batches, and a slight colour shift between batches is normal and often invisible in a single sheet but obvious when two batches meet at a corner. Every roll delivered to the site must carry the same batch number, and the order should include a five percent buffer for future repairs because replacement stock from a different batch will show. For packing, request that rolls are individually sleeved, then grouped in export cartons of twelve to twenty rolls with the batch number printed on the outside of every carton, so the installer can verify the batch without opening the box.
Wallpaper rewards a precise specification: a beautiful pattern only stays beautiful if it is washable, fire-rated, lightfast and batch-matched. Lock the technology family, the test figures, the roll size and the batch, and the wallpaper delivered will look in year ten exactly as it did on day one.
