Importing Glass Blocks from China: Patterns, Sizes and Light Transmission

Glass blocks are one of the most underused materials in modern construction. They carry daylight through a wall that is simultaneously structural, private, fire-rated and acoustically insulated, all without an electrical connection. China manufactures the full range of glass blocks at scale, and the choice between clear, frosted and patterned surfaces, and between the standard sizes, determines whether the finished wall performs as expected. This guide walks project buyers through the specification choices that separate a successful glass-block installation from a disappointing one.

The two standard sizes and where each belongs

Glass blocks come in two dominant sizes. The 190 by 190 by 80 millimetre block is the most common, offering a balance of wall strength and design flexibility, and it suits residential bathrooms, kitchen partitions and small feature walls. The 240 by 240 by 80 millimetre block creates a more architectural look with fewer grout lines per square metre and is preferred for larger commercial facades and curtain feature walls. Specialty sizes, including rectangular blocks and corner blocks, allow curved walls and neat returns, but they require longer lead times because they are produced in smaller runs. Specify the block size early, because it sets the wall module, the joint width and the installation labour.

Clear, frosted and patterned surfaces

The surface treatment controls both privacy and light transmission. Clear blocks transmit up to 75 percent of visible light and are the right choice where maximum daylight is the priority, such as stairwells and north-facing feature walls. Frosted or satin blocks transmit 50 to 60 percent of light while obscuring the shapes behind the wall, making them the standard for bathrooms and dressing areas. Patterned blocks, with horizontal or diagonal ribs cast into the glass, offer the same privacy as frosted but with a stronger decorative effect, and they are the usual choice for hotel lobbies and reception walls. Within each category, request a physical sample, because the same pattern code at different factories can render noticeably differently under daylight.

Light transmission, sound insulation and fire rating

Three performance figures separate a real specification from a decorative choice. Light transmission, measured as a percentage of visible light passing through the block, is usually quoted on the datasheet and should match the daylighting calculation. Sound insulation, measured in decibels of attenuation, typically reaches 40 decibels for a single skin of 80-millimetre blocks, which is comparable to a standard interior partition wall. Fire rating is the figure most often missed: a quality glass block wall achieves 30 to 60 minutes of integrity under the ISO 3009 test, and for partitions next to escape routes or service shafts, this rating may be a code requirement. Always confirm the fire certificate covers the full assembly, including the mortar joint, not just the block.

Installation mortar, MOQ and packing

Glass blocks are installed with a specialised mortar rather than standard cement, because the joint must remain slightly flexible to absorb thermal movement and must bond reliably to the glass surface. Specify a polymer-modified glass-block mortar and confirm it is compatible with the spacer clips the installers will use. For reinforcement, walls above two square metres require stainless steel reinforcing rods laid into every second horizontal joint. On ordering, the minimum order quantity for stock patterns is usually low, often a few pallets, while custom colours or bespoke patterns demand a full-container order. Packing is the last critical step: each block must sit in an individual cellular partition within the carton, with a polystyrene pad between layers, because any direct glass-to-glass contact guarantees edge chipping in transit.

Glass blocks reward precise specification. Lock the size, the surface, the light transmission and the fire rating, demand the polymer mortar and insist on cellular packing, and the wall delivered will be as functional as it is beautiful.
