The difference between a fixture that runs for fifty thousand hours and one that flickers out at six thousand is hidden inside the housing, on the circuit board and on the certificate of conformity. This guide breaks down the three technical pillars that decide whether an LED order is a win or a warranty nightmare.

Pillar 1 — The LED chip is the engine

Ask any supplier which chip they use and the honest answer will be one of four names: Epistar or Epileds from Taiwan, Samsung or Seoul Semiconductor from Korea, and Osram or Lumileds from Europe. These branded chips cost more than anonymous domestic dies, but they are the only ones that deliver the lumen maintenance figures printed on the datasheet. A "110 lumens per watt" claim is meaningless unless it is backed by the LM-80 test report, which measures how much light the chip still emits after six and ten thousand hours of accelerated aging. For Europe, every fixture needs CE for electromagnetic compatibility and RoHS for hazardous substances, and luminaires sold to the public must also carry a valid EN 60598 safety test report. For North America the equivalent is UL or ETL listing, which verifies the housing, wiring and thermal management together. Ask for the certificate number and verify it on the issuer website rather than trusting a PDF that can be Photoshopped. A genuine UL file number resolves to the factory name and the exact model range on the UL database.

Practical specification and negotiation

Once the technical base is set, lock the commercial details. Specify the correlated colour temperature in Kelvin (2700K warm, 4000K neutral, 5000K cool) with a tolerance of plus or minus five MacAdam ellipses, because wider bins produce visibly different shades across one room. Define the colour rendering index — CRI 80 is the floor for hospitality, CRI 90 plus for retail and galleries. State the minimum order quantity in writing and ask whether the factory tolerates mixed models in one container, which lets a small buyer fill a twenty-foot box without overstocking a single SKU. When negotiating price, ask for the breakdown by chip, driver, housing and labour rather than a single landed number; that breakdown reveals where the factory is cutting corners and gives you leverage to swap one component for a cheaper equivalent without gutting quality.
